Since the beginning of my professional work, I have been cooperating with companies extracting minerals in the earth’s crust, supporting them in observing, interpreting and predicting rock mass and surface displacement and deformation. These studies are aimed at proposing a strategy of preventive actions that minimize the anticipated effects of human activity in the rock mass. The developed research methods, research workshops and experience allow not only to assess the threats, but also the risks related to investments on the surface. Although the mentioned research areas based on the geodetic and remote sensing measurements methods, on the other hand, I used to also the mathematical modelling and GIS (geographic information systems) for prediction of the land subsidence. Over the last several years, together with my PhD students, I have been developing artificial intelligence methods (fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks) in applications for research on surface movements caused by human activity.
We do use those approaches together with the entire Land Subsidence and Hazard Mitigation Research Group in our research and cooperation with the local governments, industry and other scientific organizations.
